ASCO Releases New Patient Information Web Site

04/03/2008

The American Society for Clinical Oncology launched a new patient-oriented Web site on April 2, 2008. Called Cancer.Net (www.cancer.net), the new site replaces ASCO's People Living With Cancer site and adds new features, including tools to help patients and survivors better navigate their care.

In a press release, ASCO said that Cancer.Net is "a comprehensive, doctor-approved Web site that provides reliable, up-to-the-minute information on more than 120 types of cancer and cancer-related syndromes."

A new consumer poll from Zogby International, commissioned by ASCO, found that 59 percent of Americans have searched for information on the Internet, but only 32 percent verified the information they found with a health care provider. The poll also found that Americans have misperceptions about cancer. "Good cancer care starts with good cancer information," said ASCO President Nancy Davidson, M.D.

The site also will offer anatomical and staging illustrations, podcasts and searchable resources on clinical trials and local oncologists, as well as information on managing side effects and coping with cancer. The Cancer.Net site is made possible by the ASCO Cancer Foundation.
